CLARKSVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police have identified a veteran reserve deputy who was fatally shot while responding to a reported burglary.

Spokesman Bill Sadler says 42-year-old Sonny Smith with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and other deputies responded to the burglary report around 2:30 a.m. Friday. He says Smith was shot after he confronted the suspect.

Sadler says Smith returned fire and the suspect sustained unspecified minor injuries. The suspect is being held at the Pope County Detention Center. No charges have been reported.

Smith, an 11-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead Friday at an area hospital.

State police are investigating the shooting.
