New state seat belt law goes into effect

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — According to a new statewide law, police can now pull over drivers who aren't wearing seat belts.

Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1bMhLfX ) that starting Tuesday failing to wear a seat belt is considered a primary offense.

Officers can issues warnings to drivers on a first offense. After that, an offender can be fined $45, which can be waived upon completion of a 30-minute safety course online.

Failure to wear a seat belt was already a primary offense for drivers and passengers 18 and younger.

The new seat belt law is among 389 bills passed by the state legislature to become law Tuesday.
