ATLANTA (AP) — A medical examiner in Atlanta is still working to positively identify the four people killed when a small plane crashed into an Atlanta interstate.
DeKalb County Medical Examiner Patrick Bailey said his office will likely need until early next week to positively identify the remains. Forensic officials have contacted family members of the likely victims to assist in the process.
The fiery crash happened Friday morning shortly after a Piper PA-32 took off from DeKalb Peachtree Airport. The small aircraft narrowly missed a commercial truck before smashing into a median wall on the interstate.
DeKalb Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said four people onboard died in the crash. He called it a "miracle" that no cars were hit.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
