BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man told investigators he used a 9mm Glock handgun hidden in his coat pocket to kill a police officer because he feared the officer would find the weapon. Court documents released yesterday. Jonathan Renfro of Rathdrum told authorities he shot Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Greg Moore early Tuesday then stole his patrol vehicle. Renfro said he used methamphetamine the day before the shooting

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon State University professor is looking to expand demand for juniper wood, an invasive yet native species that's expensive to process and that builders know little about. The Capital Press reports the USDA grant-funded research seeks uses for a tree that poses a threat to greater sage grouse and rangeland health in the northwest.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Yellowstone National Park and the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday with free public programs and field trip. A bird-watching car caravan is set for 8 a.m. to noon in the park. The center will host a live raptor program and a presentation on common birds of the area from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Police in Spokane say an officer has shot and wounded a man who fired shots toward police late last night. The man was taken to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition. No officers were hurt. The Spokesman-Review reports that the police chief says officers were called to a home by residents who said a man was suicidal, drunk and had a gun.
