GARLAND, Texas (AP) — Authorities in suburban Dallas say two armed men who opened fire on a security officer outside of a contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad were shot dead by Garland police officers. The city says the gunmen's vehicle may contain an "incendiary device" and a bomb squad is on scene. It's not known if the incident is related to the event.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who served five years in prison for attempted murder is facing charges that he shot a New York City police officer in the head. Demetrius Blackwell was arraigned and ordered held without bail after appearing in court today. He was arrested last night after the shooting of Officer Brian Moore, who remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Aid groups are struggling to help the people of earthquake- devastated Nepal. But a glitch has developed. The large military and cargo planes that have been flying in aid supplies, food, medicines, and rescue and humanitarian workers have been temporarily barred from landing because they have damaged the main runway at the airport near Kathmandu.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two separate earthquakes at or near magnitude-4.0 have rattled residents in Northern and Southern California with no immediate reports of damage or injuries. A magnitude-3.8 quake hit the greater Los Angeles area early this morning. The second quake, measuring 3.6 in magnitude, struck this afternoon just south of the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Concord.

WAWARSING, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police say three congregants of a church in New York City were killed when a tractor-trailer slammed into the van they were riding in after attending a religious retreat. Police say it happened in western Ulster County this morning. The van was carrying seven people from the Bethesda French Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brooklyn.
