GARLAND, Texas (AP) — A contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad in a Dallas suburb is on lockdown after authorities reported a shooting outside the building. It isn't immediately clear if the shooting in Garland is related to the event. The New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative is hosting the contest that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The curfew imposed in Baltimore is now over. And the Maryland National Guard has begun demobilizing the 3,000 troops brought in last week to quell the rioting and looting that broke out following the death of Freddie Gray. Gov. Larry Hogan says "it's been a really rough week," and that now it's time to "get back to normal in the city."
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Cracks in the main runway are forcing authorities in Nepal to temporarily close the international airport outside Kathmandu to large planes delivering aid to millions of people who are suffering from the massive earthquake. The airport manager says the main runway was built to handle only medium-size jetliners and not large military and cargo planes.
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media are reporting that an American pilot and a Chinese passenger have been killed in a light airplane crash in eastern China. The official Xinhua (shihn-wah) news agency says neither of the deceased had been identified yet. Xinhua reported that the plane belonged to the George Heintz Aircraft Manufacturing Co. in Henan province.
JOS, Nigeria (AP) - Community leaders in Plateau state are accusing Nigerian troops of killing dozens of civilians and razing homes over the weekend to avenge the deaths of six soldiers. A military spokesman denies it. Plateau state is plagued by violence over land use between mainly Christian farmers and mainly Muslim cattle herders that has killed thousands.
