KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A powerful aftershock spooked already jittery residents in Kathmandu, Nepal, today sending them running into the streets as buildings swayed. Many others had spent a nervous night outdoors in chilly weather. The aftershock registered at magnitude 6.7. Officials say the death toll in yesterday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake has topped 2,100. Relief personal and aid shipments have begun to arrive in the stricken area.
NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Islamic extremists fighters from the Boko Haram group have attacked an island army base in Niger (nee-ZHEHR'). The defense ministry did not provide casualty figures but a military source in the region says the army may have suffered "heavy losses." The statement said the assailants approached the base in about 10 motorized canoes. Niger joined a regional offensive in January that has been credited with retaking large swaths of territory from the Nigeria-based militants.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say there are at least a dozen civilians dead today from a trio of car bombing in commercial areas in and around the Iraqi capital. The deadliest attack took place in Khilani Square, a busy commercial area in central Baghdad, where five people were killed. Earlier a bomb 20 miles south of Baghdad killed four civilians. Three people were killed in Baghdad's southwestern Amil neighborhood.
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The Coast Guard says it's still searching for at least four people missing after a storm slammed a sailing regatta off Alabama, capsizing several boats. The storm rolled in yesterday afternoon and one survivor was rescued about 9 p.m. Officials say there is one confirmed death.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Authorities in Baltimore say they suspect outside "agitators" triggered some violent incidents that erupted during a mostly peaceful protest against the death of Freddie Gray following his arrest. Officials say five officers were injured and there were a dozen or so arrests.
