BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Romanian court has sentenced a senior judge to 10 years and eight months in prison for demanding money from defendants in exchange for favorable verdicts.

Stan Mustata was convicted on six counts of taking bribes, influence peddling and abusing privileged information between October 2013 and April 2014. One count related to a trial of fraudulent football transfers. Mustata said he was inebriated when some of the discussions took place.

The Court of Appeals on Friday also banned Mustata from the legal profession for five years, but he has a right to appeal. Mustata, a judge at the same court that sentenced him, was arrested in April 2014.

The court also sentenced court secretary Mariana Curea to four years and four months.
