LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — Police in Washington state say officers fatally shot a man who had climbed up 25 feet to hide in a pile of wood at a lumberyard.

The News Tribune reports (http://is.gd/SBLCfT ) that Lakewood Lt. Chris Lawler says police responded Tuesday afternoon to investigate reports of a suspicious person at Pinnacle Lumber and Plywood. Multiple 911 callers had reported seeing a man running before climbing a fence into the lumberyard. Lawler says police had not been pursuing the man and it wasn't clear why he entered the yard.

Two officers found the man atop a stack of lumber. Lawler says they reported that the man was reaching into his pocket. That's when they opened fire, wounding him.

The man was taken to a hospital but Lawler said Tuesday night that the man had died from his injuries.

Lawler says he did not know whether the man was armed.
