THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Police detained a Dutch employee of the British embassy in The Hague on Tuesday on suspicion of involvement in a blaze at the diplomatic post that was being treated as a possible case of arson.
Police spokesman Yoeri Voogt said the 32-year-old suspect was detained near the embassy after the early morning fire at the building, which stands on a historic, tree-lined avenue in downtown The Hague.
Hague police later said in a statement that the man would remain in custody while investigations continued into the fire. The statement said the suspect, whose name was not released in line with Dutch privacy law, had a "support function" at the embassy.
Police said nothing about a possible motive. The suspect was scheduled to appear before an investigating judge on Friday.
Firefighters said the blaze was quickly brought under control and nobody was injured.
Embassy spokesman Alex Lawrence declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing police investigation.
