BOSTON (AP) — The runner who won the Boston Marathon in 2013 and donated his medal to the city after the deadly terrorist bombings has been crowned this year's men's winner. Lelisa Desisa (leh-LEE'-sah deh-SEE'-sah) of Ethiopia won today's race in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 17 seconds.
BOSTON (AP) — More survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing are urging prosecutors not to pursue the death penalty against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv). He was convicted earlier this month of carrying out the bombing, and the penalty phase begins tomorrow. A married couple who lost limbs in the attack said in a statement to the Boston Globe that "we must overcome the impulse for vengeance."
CATANIA, Sicily (AP) — An Italian prosecutor says a smuggler's boat that sank near Libya over the weekend had three levels -- and migrants were locked in the hull and on the second level. One survivor of the sinking has put the number of people on board the smugglers' boat at as many as 950, though the prosecutor said that number should be treated with caution. He said the Coast Guard had estimated 700 people were on board, based on its observations at the scene.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Transportation Security Administration is tightening security rules for aviation workers. The move comes months after a baggage handler in Atlanta was accused of smuggling guns aboard commercial aircraft. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson says new security measures will include real-time, recurring background checks for aviation workers, including airline workers. Airport and airline workers traveling as passengers will also have to go through TSA screening before boarding a flight.
DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit-area police officer who hauled a man out of his car and repeatedly punched him in the head has been charged with assault. The traffic stop happened in January, but the case didn't take shape until a TV station acquired video of the bloody arrest last month. The prosecutor in Wayne County says the video showed brutality that "cannot and will not be tolerated."
