FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Aaron Hernandez may have been an NFL star -- but to a Massachusetts jury, he was, in a prosecutor's words, "just a man who committed a brutal murder." The jury today convicted Hernandez of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd. He was quickly sentenced to the mandatory life prison term without parole.

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Jurors who convicted Aaron Hernandez of murder say they were shocked to hear a defense lawyer admit in closing arguments that Hernandez was, in fact, at the scene of the killing for which he was on trial. Jurors say the admission created more corroboration that he was guilty. Defense lawyer James Sultan had told jurors that Hernandez was a witness, and that his two co-defendants committed the killing. They are awaiting trial.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A small one-person helicopter has landed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, prompting a temporary lockdown of the Capitol Visitor's Center. Capitol Police approached the aircraft shortly after it touched down and took its pilot into custody. The man's identity and motive aren't yet known. The situation is under investigation and streets in the area were shut down. Capitol Police identified the aircraft as a "gyro copter with a single occupant."

LONDONDERRY, N.H. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is introducing himself to New Hampshire voters in a format he knows well — a town hall meeting. The likely 2016 Republican presidential contender drew a capacity crowd today to his first town hall in New Hampshire, in Londonderry. He opened the event by talking about his life story. Asked about problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs, he blamed them on a failure of leadership at the agency.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton has been meeting with small business owners and Democratic activists in Iowa as part of her effort to reintroduce herself to voters in the crucial early voting state. In the midst of a two-day swing through Iowa, Clinton is trying to show Democratic voters that she's taking nothing for granted this time around, despite having no serious competition for the Democratic presidential nomination at this early stage. In 2008, she finished third in the Iowa caucuses.
