SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Famous alumni of a Catholic school in Springfield damaged by a tornado four years ago are urging church officials to rebuild the school at its current location, where it opened in 1959.
Hall of Fame football linebacker Nick Buoniconti, New York Yankees pitcher Chris Capuano and University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg were among 18 former student-athletes of Cathedral High School to issue a statement Thursday urging the Diocese of Springfield to rebuild on Surrey Road.
The Republican newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1CAsBf9 ) that the alumni welcome plans to merge Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic and open a new regional high school in 2017 at a site to be determined.
Cathedral students were relocated to a former elementary school in Wilbraham after Cathedral was hit by a tornado in June 2011.
