AMES, Iowa (AP) — Some students are trying to save two old trees that will be removed to make room for a new dormitory at Iowa State University in Ames.
The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/1GobmoA ) reports that senior Jena Kurtz has launched a petition drive on change.org and a "savethetrees" Facebook page. The hackberry is an estimated 192 years old; the black walnut an estimated 171 years old.
Maclaine Sorden is a graduate student in landscape architecture, and he's convinced the dormitory design could be changed to accommodate the trees. He sent a letter to university President Steven Leath, urging him to consider modifying the plans.
Cathy Brown is assistant director of Campus Physical Planning, and she told the Register in an email that the university still plans to remove the trees.
