CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A white South Carolina police officer is behind bars for the fatal weekend shooting of a black motorist pulled over for a faulty brake light. North Charleston officer Michael Thomas Slager was arrested by state police on Tuesday after a dramatic video of the shooting went public. It appears to show the officer firing eight shots from a distance, a number of them hitting 50-year-old Walter Scott in the back. The Justice Department says the FBI will investigate.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Two black candidates are among three people elected Tuesday to the Ferguson, Missouri, City Council. The St. Louis suburb has been at the center of a national debate about how police interact with minority residents since the August shooting of an unarmed, black 18-year-old by a white officer. Just one council member was black even though the majority of residents are black.
CHICAGO (AP) — Rahm Emanuel will serve a second term as mayor of Chicago. He's defeated Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" (HAY'-soos CHOO'-ee) Garcia in a runoff. It appears Emanuel will wind up with about 56 percent of the vote compared to around 44 percent for Garcia. Emanuel, a former White House chief of staff, contended he was best suited to handle major challenges. Many of those heading to the polls Tuesday said the election should be a signal to Emanuel.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Voters in Springfield, Missouri, the state's third-largest city, have voted to repeal an ordinance that provided protection against discrimination in housing and hiring based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Opponents of the nondiscrimination ordinance said it violates their freedoms by preventing them from operating a business according to their religious beliefs. Officials with the gay rights group PROMO expressed disappointment.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A spring storm that had doused Northern California for the previous 24 hours has arrived in Southern California. But it's only bringing mostly light rainfall across a region that has been experiencing extreme drought conditions. The Los Angeles Dodgers had a rare rain delay.
