SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — There won't be a trial next week in California in a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the parents of a 15-year-old Northern California girl who committed suicide after being sexually assaulted at a party. The San Jose Mercury News reports the families of two teenagers who acknowledged the act agreed to pay the family of Audrie Pott $950,000. Both teens are required to give 10 presentations at high schools or youth groups about the dangers spreading nude photos, and alcohol and drugs.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are being blamed for at least two deaths and flooding in eastern Kentucky. The search also continues for a mother and child after they were swept into a flooded creek as authorities attempted a rescue. Meanwhile, thousands of people in south central Kansas lost power amid winds that reached nearly 90 mph and a possible tornado is being investigated in Oklahoma.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Basketball won't be the only happening in Indianapolis this weekend. Gay-rights activists and their supporters are planning a rally during this weekend's Final Four to push for a state law that specifically bars discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The event follows widespread criticism over a new religious liberties law that critics said could allow discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The shooting death of a young boy has touched off protests in one of Rio de Janeiro's biggest complex of slums. Some protesters briefly clashed with police after the rally. The protesters hurled rocks and bottles while police officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades. The boy was killed during a police operation against suspected drug traffickers.
UNDATED (AP) — Sarah Kemp Brady, who became an activist for gun control after her husband was shot in the head in the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, has died. She was 73. Family members say Brady died in a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia, after battling pneumonia. Brady's husband, former White House Press Secretary James Brady, died Aug. 4, also at the age of 73.
