NEW YORK (AP) — New York City education officials say suspensions and arrests of students are down since last year.
The city Department of Education said Tuesday there were 28,994 suspensions between July 1, 2014 and March 22, 2015. That's 10 percent fewer than the total of 32,164 during the same period a year earlier.
Arrests in schools dropped from 267 to 225. That's a 16 percent decline.
Major crime dropped 9 percent from 449 reported incidents to 408.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina (fah-REEN'-yah) says her department is committed to improving the school atmosphere for students in all five boroughs.-
The Department of Education is required to report the data to the City Council.
Council Education Committee Chairman Daniel Dromm says he is pleased to see that suspensions have declined.
