CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Generations of Nevada's Native Americans passed through the doors of the Stewart Indian School, some enduring harsh treatment as their culture was stripped away while others left with fond memories. For nearly a century, thousands were enrolled in the boarding school on the outskirts of Carson City. Now state lawmakers and Gov. Brian Sandoval are taking steps to preserve the campus and its role in the state's development.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Friends of a man killed in a Friday hang-gliding accident along with an 11-year-old boy say he was an expert in the sport. Ron Peck, president of a Las Vegas hang gliding club, said Saturday he was trained by Jonathan "Kelly" Harrison. The 55-year-old was killed along with 11-year-old Arys Moorhead of Farmington, New Mexico, after their hang glider crashed during a tandem flight.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police say an 11-year-old boy is being treated for serious head injuries after he fell off a moving vehicle in Carson City. Authorities say it appears the boy was standing on the running boards of an SUV driven by a relative as the driver left a family gathering yesterday. The child was thrown off the car and hit his head on the pavement.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say 16 people have been driven from their homes after a fire at a northwest Reno apartment complex. The blaze started about 11 a.m. Saturday. Most of the damage was contained to that apartment, but others had smoke damage and eight units were unlivable.
