SPANISH FORK CANYON, Utah (AP) — A head-on crash between an SUV and a semi-trailer on Highway 6 killed a 19-year-old and left coal spilled across the highway.
The Provo Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1HEsMtQ) that Mapleton 19-year-old Erik Mack was killed Tuesday afternoon when he collided with the truck south of Provo.
The Utah Highway Patrol said the driver and passenger in the truck were both hospitalized. Their names have not been released.
Officials said the cause of the crash is unclear but said Mack crossed the center line of the highway into oncoming traffic. They are examining his cellphone.
The trailer jackknifed after the collision, spilling the coal it was carrying and damaging power poles.
A third vehicle was involved but only sustained minor damage.
