RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The Rapid City School Board has approved a five-year, $6 million opt out of the state property tax freeze.
Board President Jim Hansen says the group understands that the move will put a burden on some homeowners. But he says the additional revenue is needed to address budget shortfalls that are affecting the quality of schools.
The school district budgeted $85 million for the current school year by dipping into reserves.
People who object to the opt out can refer it to a public vote if they gather 3,224 petition signatures.
