BERLIN (AP) — The head of the German airline Germanwings says the plane that crashed today in the French Alps had gone into a long descent before it crashed, likely killing all 150 people on board. He says the descent began shortly after the plane reached its cruising altitude following its takeoff from Barcelona. The descent lasted eight minutes, before radar and air traffic control contact broke off.
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Officials at two airports have been trying to provide help and information to relatives and friends of the passengers aboard the crashed Germanwings flight 9525. In Barcelona, where the plane took off this morning, police escorted people, some of them crying, through a terminal and took them to a secure part of the airport. In Duesseldorf, the destination airport, family members arriving at the airport were taken from the main terminal to a nearby building.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's housing market is showing some signs of life. The government says sales of new homes climbed to their fastest pace in seven years last month. January sales were also revived upward. But other parts of the housing market have struggled as the year got off to a frigid start in much of the country.
LONDON (AP) — Actress Angelina Jolie has had more surgery aimed at preventing cancer. She revealed two years ago that she carries a defective gene that puts her at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. And she had her healthy breasts removed to try to avoid cancer. Now she writes in the New York Times that she's had her ovaries and her fallopian tubes removed for the same reason.
SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man who skipped out on jury duty 11 times in the last two years has been arrested -- inside a courthouse. Owen Fazenbaker had gone there seeking relief from a child support ruling. According to the Somerset Daily American, the judge told him he found it "ironic" that the man could find his way to court for that, but not for jury duty. Fazenbaker promised to serve on future juries, in order to avoid a fine of $500 and ten days in jail for each time he's missed jury duty.
