CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it a crime to make a fraudulent report to police on a nonemergency 311 number.

Democratic Assemblyman Edgar Flores is the primary sponsor of AB 287, which was discussed Monday in the Assembly Judiciary Committee.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor to knowingly make a false 311 call to police. The proposal also makes it a penalty to fraudulently call nonemergency numbers if the call results in the likely risk of or actual injury or death.

Current law makes it a crime to fraudulently call a 911 emergency line, but Flores said his bill would close a loophole and extend the same rules to nonemergency calls.

The committee took no action on the bill.
