NEW YORK (AP) — A leafy section of Brooklyn known for its low crime and large Orthodox Jewish population has been hit by an early-morning fire that killed seven children and critically injured two people. Officials say the children ranged in age from 5 to 15-years old. The blaze tore through a residence and the New York Post reported it was a brick home. The fire marshal is investigating.
KENNER, La. (AP) — A security checkpoint at New Orleans international airport erupted into chaos when a man armed with wasp spray and a machete attacked TSA agents and passengers. He was eventually shot three times and was taken to a hospital for surgery. Officials say there were no other major injuries. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says suspect Richard White did not appear to be trying to board a plane.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Thousands of crime victims in Oregon got false notices of prisoner releases after a "major technical glitch" in the state's crime victim notification system. The corrections department says the glitch appears to have been triggered by "routine system maintenance."
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A spokeswoman for Wisconsin's governor says officials are confident the state's new abortion law will be upheld on appeal. A federal judge struck down the law requiring doctors performing abortions to get hospital admitting privileges, ruling that it overly restricted women's access to abortion. The judge issued a permanent injunction.
TORONTO (AP) — A terror trial in Canada has ended with the conviction of two men for plotting to attack a passenger train traveling from New York to Toronto. They could face life in prison after being found guilty of several terror-related charges. Investigators say the men received guidance from members of al-Qaida, in what they called the first known attack planned by the terrorist network in Canada.
