LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Authorities are accusing suspended-Utah State football player Gregory Weichers of not only soliciting a prostitute last fall, but also giving her drugs and sexually assaulting her. Logan police said Wednesday in a news release that Weichers gave the prostitute marijuana and sexually assaulted her in October at a hotel in Logan. The 20-year-old Weichers previously pleaded guilty to soliciting a prostitute, and was suspended indefinitely from the team.
OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A Utah jury has convicted a former death row inmate for the second time in a 30-year-old rape and murder case, but the verdict is only the beginning for Douglas Lovell. A lawyer for the 57-year-old defendant didn't argue he was innocent during closing arguments Wednesday in Ogden. Michael Bouwhuis is focusing instead on trying to keep Lovell off death row during the sentencing portion of the trial, which is expected to begin Friday.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State health officials are confirming claims that in recent years, there have more stillbirths in an eastern Utah community with booming gas and oil development, but officials haven't explained the uptick and say they can't tell if it's a trend. A Utah Department of Health study released Wednesday shows that the 2013 stillbirth rate in Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah Counties was 5.9 per 1,000 live births, the highest rate for the region since 1994.
MURRAY, Utah (AP) — Authorities are seeking surveillance video footage after a gas station convenience store clerk was found shot and bleeding from the head in an apparent robbery. The 62-year-old man was found by customers Wednesday morning on the floor behind the counter at the Lee Mart in Murray.
