ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The international board for a University of Michigan fraternity said Tuesday that its chapter at the campus is being disbanded after some of its members were involved in vandalism at ski resorts in Northern Michigan.
The Sigma Alpha Mu International Board also said it voted to permanently suspend the charter of the Ann Arbor chapter, according to a release.
Six fraternities and sororities from the school damaged doors, furniture, fixtures and carpet at Treetops and Boyne Highlands during an alcohol-fueled weekend in January.
Damage, legal fees and other expenses will cost about $430,000 at Treetops Resort in Gaylord. About $30,000 in damage was done to 12 condos at Boyne Highlands near Petoskey.
Sigma Alpha Mu's board said its action was necessary because chapter officers refused to identify members who damaged the hotel property, those responsible for the damage have not come forward and the failure of bystanders to stop the vandalism.
"Sigma Alpha Mu's values and standards of conduct were violated by the actions of those members whose behavior was abhorrent," the group said. "Sigma Alpha Mu worked in cooperation with university officials and regretfully agreed with their request to close the chapter."
University officials cut ties last month with the Sigma Alpha Mu chapter in Ann Arbor.
The school also said it was restricting the activities of Sigma Delta Tau sorority for two years. Two more fraternities, Pi Kappa Alpha and Chi Psi, and two more sororities, Delta Gamma and Alpha Phi, were reprimanded for what happened at Boyne.
