LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say one person is dead and an assailant in a dark-colored sedan is sought after a sidewalk shooting overnight in a neighborhood in northwest Las Vegas.

Officer Laura Meltzer says police responding to a report that someone had been shot at 1 a.m. Tuesday found the male victim on Calico Vista Boulevard. That's near Washington Avenue and Buffalo Drive.

The mortally wounded person was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name wasn't immediately made public.

Meltzer says the victim was walking with at least one other person when the car passed, made a U-turn and words were exchanged before the shooting.

No one else was reported to have been injured.

Meltzer says it wasn't immediately clear how many people were in the car.
