MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot State University is beefing up its student recruiting efforts after a four-year slide in enrollment following major flooding in the northern North Dakota city.

About 3,400 students were enrolled at Minot State last fall, down about 12 percent from the fall of 2010, according to data from the North Dakota University System. Enrollment dropped 5 percent after the June 2011 Souris River flood and has fallen every year since. Then-President David Fuller attributed 2011 fall in enrollment to the flooding, which spared the university but displaced thousands of homeowners and led to a housing shortage in the city.

President Steve Shirley, who assumed leadership of the four-year school last summer, wants to see more students from North Dakota enrolled. The university has stepped up recruiting in Ward County, Marketing Director Teresa Loftesnes and Enrollment Services Team Coordinator Erica Ziegler told the Minot Daily News (http://bit.ly/1xaSpCH ).

MSU officials are using several methods, including personal visits to nearby towns, email and social media, targeting potential students and their parents. The goal is to make it more convenient for students to learn about the university, Ziegler said.

One new marketing effort focuses on student success stories. A different student is being highlighted via a Twitter and Facebook campaign every week. There will be 25 student success stories featured, Loftesnes said.
