GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A Carbondale woman accused of mixing an entire box of rat poison into smoothies for herself and her two daughters has pleaded guilty.
The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports (http://bit.ly/1GliX3n ) 33-year-old Maria Alvarado-Gomez pleaded guilty Monday to felony child abuse through the manufacture of a controlled substance. She's scheduled for sentencing June 1.
After feeding the girls the poison on June 30, 2014, Alvarado-Gomez told investigators through an interpreter that she "would rather the children be dead than alive in Mexico," where she said the girls' father wanted to take them.
The 8-year-old and 11-year-old girls were hospitalized and released to their father's care.
Alvarado-Gomez was initially arrested on two counts of first-degree attempted murder, but the charges were amended to allow a plea to a lesser charge.
