That word comes in a message allegedly by the insurgent leader posted on Twitter and reported by the SITE Intelligence monitoring service. Meanwhile, police say four suicide bomb attacks in a northeastern city on Saturday killed at least 54 people.
SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Fifty years after being beaten by police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, during a march for voting rights, Congressman John Lewis urged the thousands of people gathered there today to build on the legacy of the civil rights movement and to stand up for what they believe in. The event marks the 50th anniversary of what's known as "Bloody Sunday."
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former Vice President Walter Mondale has been released from the hospital after being treated for the flu. A Mayo Clinic spokeswoman says Mondale was treated last night for flu and cold symptoms and is doing well enough to go home. Mondale, who is 87, was former President Jimmy Carter's vice president from 1977 to 1981. He was also a senator from Minnesota.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dan Aykroyd plans to make a donation to the family of a Philadelphia police officer killed in the line of duty. KYW-TV reports the comedic actor made the announcement yesterday while visiting the Philadelphia Flower Show to promote his vodka company. Officer Robert Wilson III died Thursday in an exchange of gunfire with two robbery suspects at a video game store.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The rift over immigration is opening up publicly at an Iowa forum on agriculture, energy, trade and food policy. Most of the nine possible Republican presidential candidates for 2016 are calling for enforcing existing laws. But others, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Lindsay Graham, propose offering immigrants in the U.S. illegally a path to legal status.
