SELMA, Ala. (AP) — President Barack Obama says America's racial history "still casts its long shadow" despite a half-century of progress toward a more perfect union. The nation's first black president is in Selma, Alabama, where civil rights activists were beaten by police 50 years ago today as they tried to march to Montgomery. Obama spoke immediately after Rep. John Lewis, a leader of the Selma march who was brought down by police truncheons on that day in 1965, fracturing his skull.
TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expressing "deep sadness" over the death of a Canadian soldier in Iraq. But he says it is imperative that the coalition efforts against the Islamic State group continue. Canada's defense department says a Canadian special forces soldier was killed and three others wounded in a friendly fire incident yesterday. The military says the troops had just returned to an observation post at the front line when they were mistakenly fired upon by Kurdish fighters.
VIENNA (AP) — Austrian officials say fighters from the Islamic State group have attacked an oil field in Libya and nine foreign workers are unaccounted for. An Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman says several security personnel were killed in yesterday's attack at the site south of Sirte (sert). He says security teams retook the site, but nine foreign workers are unaccounted for -- an Austrian, a Czech and seven non-EU citizens.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Seven people have been treated for injuries after a garage roof collapsed during a party at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center says none of the injuries are life-threatening. Police say three people were arrested for misdemeanors. The university says it is working with police, and it has opened its own investigation that could result in disciplinary measures. Hundreds of students were at the party.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Spring must be getting close -- it's time to set the clocks ahead one hour. Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. tomorrow. That means most Americans will trade an hour of sleep tonight for an extra hour of sunlight tomorrow evening. Standard time returns Nov. 1.
