PHOENIX (AP) — Prosecutors in the Jodi Arias case say they don't regret trying again to send the convicted murderer to death row after jurors deadlocked on her punishment for a second time.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery told reporters Thursday that "regret is a place in the past I can't afford to live in." He decided to seek the death penalty a second time in Arias' sentencing retrial, which began in October after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict at her first trial.
Because jurors deadlocked on her punishment again Thursday, Arias avoids a possible death sentence and instead faces life in prison.
Prosecutor Juan Martinez, who argued the case, says he would accept the decision. He says sometimes the outcome is "what the system provides you."
