PORT ARANSAS, Texas (AP) — Dozens of turtles left stunned by cold weather from the Gulf of Mexico to the Northeast are spending the winter staying warm in Texas.
The Victoria Advocate (http://bit.ly/1FsrfG9 ) reported Tuesday that about 50 endangered turtles from Massachusetts face more care.
Ben Higgins with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Galveston says those Kemp's ridley sea turtles are expected to be freed in May.
Hundreds of cold-stunned turtles have been found beached in Massachusetts since November, overwhelming the New England Aquarium in Boston. Dozens of those turtles arrived in Texas in December.
Higgins says the Galveston facility is also still treating 40 green turtles found stranded in Texas.
Officials at Padre Island National Seashore say overall about 700 turtles were found cold-stunned in Texas this winter. More than 180 died.
