SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A veteran San Francisco police officer who was convicted of stealing money and property from criminal suspects has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said Monday that the four felony convictions against former Sgt. Ian Furminger marked a day of shame for law enforcement. Furminger was also fined $25,000.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported (http://bit.ly/1w3xsDz) that the 48-year-old Furminger told the judge he is innocent and his only regret was not testifying during his trial. He plans to appeal.
A jury convicted Furminger and former Officer Edmond Robles in December of stealing thousands of dollars found during searches involving drug dealers and their homes.
Robles is scheduled to be sentenced March 18.
A third officer, Reynaldo Vargas, pleaded guilty to similar charges and testified against the other two. The officers were fired following their convictions.
