HONOLULU (AP) — The state Department of Education says Hawaiian language immersion third- and fourth-graders will be able to take assessment tests in the Hawaiian language this spring
The students will take the assessments in lieu of the state's English language arts and math assessments.
The department said Thursday it developed a Hawaiian language field test together with the University of Hawaii. The test will measure progress on par with assessments given to public school students in English.
The department says the U.S. Department of Education has granted a waiver allowing students taking the field test to forgo taking the statewide assessment in English.
Hawaiian Immersion Advisory Council Chairman Kalehua Krug says the field test brings the immersion program one step closer to ensuring children have every educational opportunity in the Hawaiian language.
