COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark's prime minister has joined hundreds of other mourners for a funeral today for a security guard who was shot and killed outside a synagogue over the weekend.
It was one of two fatal shootings by a gunman who police say may have been inspired by terror attacks in Paris last month.
The attacker, identified as Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, had earlier killed a Danish filmmaker outside a building hosting a free speech seminar. Police say he did so with one shot from an M-95 assault rifle. He then sprayed the entrance with 27 bullets, wounding three police officers inside.
It's not clear how he obtained the weapon, which can't be legally purchased in Denmark.
He appeared nine hours later outside a synagogue in Copenhagen, where he fired nine rounds with two handguns, killing the security guard and wounding two police officers. He was then killed in a firefight with police.
A Denmark native with Palestinian parents, El-Hussein had been in and out of prison for violence and weapons offenses. Court documents show he had recently served time for a stabbing on a commuter train.
