ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — The Utah prison inmate suspected of killing of his cellmate during a fight at the state prison in Uinta already was serving up to life in prison for a murder at a family gathering in St. George two years ago.
Police say 33-year-old Mario Lucero allegedly beat and suffocated his cellmate, 23-year-old Julio Guerrero, during a fight at the correctional facility on Tuesday.
The (St. George) Spectrum reported Thursday (http://tinyurl.com/lbnawps) that Lucero pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October and was sentenced to 15 years to life in the killing of 31-year-old Jeramy Shawn Olsen.
Police said at the time Olsen was trying to defend his common law wife and her mother from an attack initiated by Lucero at the gathering in February 2013. Olsen died at a Las Vegas hospital.
