TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan's aviation authority is ordering the suspension of 10 pilots from TransAsia Airways who failed a proficiency test given after one of the airline's planes crashed this month in Taipei, killing at least 42 people. The Civil Aviation Administration says the 10 failed the oral exam on handling emergency situations. Another 19 pilots who did not take the test will also be suspended. Aviation experts say the pilots of the crashed plane made the mistake of shutting off the second engine when the other one went idle shortly after takeoff. Only 15 people survived.
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) — Opening statements begin today in the Texas trial of a former Marine accused of killing Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL depicted in the blockbuster movie "American Sniper." Eddie Ray Routh (rowth) faces life in prison without parole if he's convicted. His family says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield were gunned down two years ago when they took Routh to a gun range in Stephenville, Texas.
SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The United States, Britain and France say the dangerous situation in Yemen has forced them to shut down their embassies, and Britain is telling all of its citizens to leave the country. Yemen has been in crisis for months, since Shiite Houthi (HOO'-thee) rebels began their offensive, and they've since taken over the capital Sanaa (sah-NAH'). There are scattered anti-Houthi demonstrations today. Witnesses say the Houthis attacked one protest, stabbing and beating demonstrators.
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — A court in Belgium has sentenced the leader of a terror organization to 12 years in prison, and has given dozens of other members lesser sentences. The court ruled that the group Sharia4Belgium recruited youngsters to fight in Syria and wanted to violently overthrow democracy and replace it with strict sharia law. Forty-six Muslims were originally indicted, though only a handful appeared in court. Some are believed to be fighting in Syria.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Today, Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder will award 22 people with the Medal of Valor, the nation's highest honor for public safety officers who risk their own safety to save or protect others. Recipients include Sgt. Daniel Hutchinson, who was shot three times but still managed to rescue two fellow sheriff's deputies, and Officer Michael Keith, who used his shirt to beat back flames from a car, then pulled a state trooper to safety just before the vehicle exploded.
