RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2007 shooting death of a tourist in downtown Reno.
Washoe County District Judge Scott Freeman imposed the sentence Wednesday on Frank Smith for the death of 30-year-old Royce Riley III of Oakland, California.
Smith and 37-year-old co-defendant Deljuan Goodlow, both of Stockton, California, were sentenced to life terms without parole after their convictions for first-degree murder and burglary in the May 2007 death of Riley at the Lido Inn.
But the Nevada Supreme Court in 2011 ruled the two deserved a new trial because of improper comments by a judge during jury selection.
They were convicted for the same crimes by a jury last September.
Goodlow was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.
