BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Appalachian State University is adding additional counselors to help students cope with the deaths of nine students this school year.

Media outlets report the university has added two full-time and two part-time counselors this year and plans to add two more part-time counselors in the coming weeks.

The school, which has a student body of 18,00, has also extended the hours that its counseling center is open.

Two student deaths have been attributed to suicide, one to a drug overdose and four to traffic accidents. Authorities are investigating the cause of death in the other two cases. Police say foul play is not indicated in any of the deaths.

The school says that during the entire academic year last year seven students died.
