BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — As a blizzard slams the Northeast, the Northern Plains are seeing record-warm temperatures for the middle of winter. Readings were in the 50s and 60s yesterday, and they're climbing even higher today, with forecasts in the 70s in South Dakota.

The city of Aberdeen has had to shut down its outdoor skating rinks.

Meteorologist Todd Hamilton says the jet stream has moved to the north, allowing warm Pacific air to flow in. He says a lack of snow cover also is contributing to the warmth.

Colder temperatures are expected to return by the weekend.
