MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian troops are in a fierce fight with Islamic extremists who have attacked the biggest city in northeastern Nigeria. Soldiers and hospital workers say dozens of combatants have been killed and wounded, and citizens are unable to escape because troops are blocking the roads into the city. Amnesty International says hundreds of thousands of civilians could be "at grave risk."
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A mayor in the southern Philippines says more than 30 police commandos have been killed in a clash with Muslim insurgents. The commandos had entered a southern village looking for a top terror suspect when they encountered members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and other insurgents, who began fighting the outnumbered police. The Moro group signed a peace deal with the government last year.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's leader says intercepted radio and telephone conversations prove that Russian-backed separatists fired the rockets that pounded the southeastern city of Mariupol (mah-ROO'-pahl) yesterday, killing at least 30 people. President Petro Poroshenko held an emergency meeting of his Security Council today. A rebel leader initially announced that his forces were launching an offensive on the port city, but after the extent of civilian casualties became known he blamed Ukrainian forces for the carnage.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Power is being restored to tens of thousands of people in Southern California after fierce Santa Ana winds toppled trees and power lines. Officials say the winds, gusting as high as 89 mph, knocked out power to more than 54,000 homes and businesses, mostly in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Crews worked through the night to restore power, leaving 3,000 still without electricity this morning.
NEW YORK (AP) — Forecasters say a major snowstorm with blizzard-like conditions could drop a foot or more of snow across much of the Northeast at the start of the work week. The National Weather Service says a storm system diving out of the Midwest has the potential to coat an area from Philadelphia to Maine with snow beginning late tonight and intensifying well into Tuesday.
