CHICAGO (AP) — President Barack Obama is remembering Ernie Banks as "an incredible ambassador for baseball, and for the city of Chicago" who was known as much for his love of the game as for his home runs. The Chicago Cubs slugger known as "Mr. Cub" died last night at 83. He was an 11-time All-Star from 1953 to 1971 on a team that never made it to the postseason. Banks was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977, the first year he was eligible, and selected to baseball's All-Century team in 1999.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — World leaders and dignitaries have begun arriving in Saudi Arabia to offer their condolences following the death of King Abdullah. Iran's foreign minister was among the first to arrive, despite tensions between the two nations. President Barack Obama will cut short a visit to India that begins tomorrow so he can fly to Saudi Arabia to pay his respects.
SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been marching in protest today against Shiite rebels who hold the capital. Some 20,000 hit the streets of Sanaa (sah-NAH') in the largest protest since the rebels, known as Houthis (HOO'-theez), took over the city in September. Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans denouncing the rebels and demanding the restoration of the president who resigned Thursday after being taken prisoner in his home.
MADRID (AP) — Spain says its national police have arrested four suspected jihadists in a north African enclave on the Mediterranean coast. The Interior Ministry says the two pairs of well-trained, radicalized brothers were preparing to carry out a suicide attack.
BOSTON (AP) — Parts of the Northeast are getting their first real taste of winter today. A storm crawling up the coast has left a slushy, snowy coating on New York City and Philadelphia before moving into New England. The storm hit Pennsylvania and New Jersey overnight, dropping as much as 8 inches by daybreak in communities north of Philadelphia and west of New York.
