BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Agency officials tasked with taking care of Idaho's poor and disabled say people are still struggling despite the state's low unemployment rate and improving economy. Department of Health and Welfare Director Richard Armstrong told state budget writers today that demand for public assistance continues to escalate. According to Armstrong, only a third of Idaho's 1.5 million residents earn a sufficient wage to provide for a family of four.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho State Police say one person has died in a series of crashes on Interstate 84 near the Idaho-Oregon border. Police say it's not clear how many crashes happened this morning or how many vehicles are involved. Police say slick roads led to the crashes that closed the highway in both directions until about 11:30 a.m.
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho National Laboratory is no longer accepting Idaho driver's licenses for identification because they don't meet federal security requirements. Idaho driver's licenses won't work because Idaho lawmakers prohibited the state from implementing the Real ID Act of 2005, passed in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho lawmakers worried that special recognition of the Idaho giant salamander could lead to federal protections have rejected a grade school student's request it be named the state amphibian. The Spokesman-Review reports it was 14-year-old Ilah Hickman's fifth attempt in as many years to persuade lawmakers that students made a good choice for state amphibian. Hickman says she'll try again next year.
