MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Weigh-ins are beginning for thousands of people participating in Alabama's largest weight-loss program.

The Scale Back Alabama program begins weighing-in people participating in this year's edition of the free program on Monday.

People will be stepping on scales at sites around the state to officially enter into the contest. Each will attempt to lose at least 10 pounds during the 10-week program to be eligible for cash prizes at the end.

Participants will receive tips on eating less and exercising more during the competition.

Alabama ranks eighth nationally in terms of adult obesity, and about one-third of the state's adult residents are obese.

The program aims to help reduce those numbers. It's sponsored by the state health agency, the Alabama Hospital Association and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.
