JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's Shin Bet security service says it arrested the first known Islamic State cell operating inside Israel. The intelligence agency says seven cell members were caught just before executing an attack and admitted to belonging to the extremist group. The Shin Bet estimates that around 30 Arab Israelis have joined the Islamic State group in Syria.
BEIRUT (AP) — A Hezbollah official says an Israeli strike in southern Syria has killed five of the Shiite militant group's fighters. The Lebanese group has been fighting alongside Syrian government forces against Syrian rebels. A Syrian activist says Hezbollah is rumored to be training pro-Assad militiamen and Syrian government forces near the Golan Heights.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Investigators are searching outside Vice President Joe Biden's Delaware home and nearby houses to determine whether shots fired last night hit anything. The U.S. Secret Service says multiple gunshots were fired from a vehicle on a road outside the Biden home's security perimeter. The vice president and his wife were not at home at the time.
NEW YORK (AP) — Rain "flash-freezing" on roads, sidewalks and commuter train platforms has made travel hazardous in the Northeast, leading to several highway closures and accidents that have claimed at least four lives. State police in Philadelphia say a crash involving 30 to 50 vehicles on Interstate 76 killed one person, and two others died in a crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 476. In Connecticut, police cited slippery conditions in a crash that killed an 88-year-old woman.
MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — A central Florida shopping mall is reopening a day after a shooting in its food court that left two people dead, including the gunman. Police say 57-year-old Jose Garcia-Rodriguez shot his wife and an unidentified man before turning the gun on himself shortly before the mall opened yesterday. Police say the 33-year-old woman was the intended victim in the shooting. She survived.
