WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has decided to step into the same-sex marriage debate before the end of the current term. The court will take up gay-rights cases that ask it to overturn bans in four states and declare for the entire nation that people can marry the partners of their choice, regardless of gender. The cases will be argued in April, and a decision is expected by late June.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — There's a mixed reaction to a deal between Penn State University and the NCAA to lift the last of the sanction stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child-molestation scandal. Lawyers for Sandusky's victims worry that the NCAA's retreat sends the wrong message. And at Penn State's sprawling main campus the news was welcome, although many feel the NCAA's actions were too damaging to the school as a whole.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A court filing in the case of a man accused of conspiring to export goods and technology illegally to Iran reveals more generalized telephone snooping. The Drug Enforcement Administration has formally acknowledged that it maintained a sweeping database of phone calls made from the United States to multiple foreign countries. The Justice Department says it's discontinued the program.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five men are under arrest in Afghanistan in connection with a school massacre across the border in Pakistan that killed 150 people -- mostly children. Afghan officials say the suspects are all foreigners who helped support the Dec. 16 assault by the Taliban. The countries are rivals but have cooperated more in this case.
TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) — Pope Francis apologized to residents in the eastern Philippines for having to cut short his visit to survivors of devastating, 2013 Typhoon Haiyan. During a wind and rain-whipped Mass, Francis said he was at a loss for words about all that people had suffered, adding "I walk with you all with my silent heart." But an approaching storm forced the pontiff to eventually rush to his plane about four hours early.
