WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has allotted more than twice the normal time it hears arguments when it considers same-sex marriages at a hearing in April. The court must iron out conflicting positions by appellate courts on state bans on gay marriage. Thirty-six states now license the weddings. The court's decision is expected in late June.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department has set a Feb. 2 deadline for federal agencies to provide advice on whether to move forward with the hotly debated Keystone XL pipeline. The department didn't set a timeline for when it would make its long-awaited judgment on whether the pipeline from Canada was in the U.S. national interest. Supporters say the pipeline would create jobs and help with energy independence. Opponents say the oil would go on world market, be an environmental risk and create few permanent jobs.
KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Muslim anger continues around the world against this week's cover of a French satirical weekly that caricatures the Prophet Muhammad a week after a dozen people were killed at the Paris publication.. Protest against Charlie Hebdo claimed four lives in the West African country of Niger (nee-ZHEHR'). A French cultural center was also torched. There have also been violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Pakistan, Jordan and Algeria. Any depiction of the prophet is deemed insulting to many followers of Islam.
ROCKY FORD, Colo. (AP) — Investigators say a police officer who killed a man while patrolling a rural Colorado community shot him in the back after stopping him on the street and following him home even though the man wasn't an imminent threat. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation found that the officer -- James Ashby -- shot the man even as he was moving away. The man had been skateboarding in the street.
SAN BERNARINO, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California high school basketball coach has been suspended and faces accusations of mercilessly running up the score after his team won a game 161-2.Arroyo Valley High girls' coach Michael Anderson was suspended for two games after the victory last week against Bloomington High. The losing coach says the winner is good and "X's and O'" but not so good at ethics.
