VERVIERS, Belgium (AP) — An official in Belgium says security forces went after a terror cell because it was in the process of carrying out a major attack, possibly within hours. Two suspects were killed in a gunbattle and a third was taken into custody. It's believed they were going to attack police installations. A neighbor who lives near the former bakery where the suspects were based says gunpowder could be smelled in the air. A manhunt is on for other possibly involved.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — A week after a French newspaper was attacked because it had caricatured Islam, Pope Francis has said that there are limits to freedom of speech, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith. Francis made the comment while speaking about fundamental rights. However, he called the attacks in Paris horrific violence in God's name that can't be justified. The pope is visiting the Philippines.

CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — Republican presidential prospect Ben Carson has compared the extremist group Islamic State to American patriots willing to die for freedom. He made the comment during a speech to the Republican National Committee's winter meeting in suburban San Diego. After the speech, He said it's "ridiculous" to suggest he was likening American patriots to the Islamic State. In 2013 Carson, a former neurosurgeon, called the Affordable Care Act "the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery."

WASHINGTON (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron says the U.S. and the U.K. will stage cyber "war games" this year to boost both countries' resistance to cyberattacks. The first round will simulate an attack on banks and the financial sector in London and New York. The U.K. says there will be more exercises later to test the resilience of national infrastructure. Cameron, who had a working dinner with President Barack Obama tonight, says the goal is to pool resources so both countries stay one step ahead of hackers.

MARKHAM, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago police officer has testified that he fired beanbags at a knife-wielding 95-year-old man at an assisted-living facility because he feared for his life. The elderly man was shot five times with a beanbag gun before he dropped a knife and his cane. He died hours later. Park Forest Police Officer Craig Taylor is being tried by a judge on a charge of felony reckless conduct. Taylor says he was also following orders.
