BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — The family of a teenager charged with two counts of attempted murder in the January 2013 shooting of a classmate and the targeting of another in Central California has filed a claim seeking $5.5 million from the school district.
The Bakersfield Californian reports (http://bit.ly/1AN3R5b ) Bryan Oliver's family filed the claim against the Taft Union High School District because they say the district failed to protect their child from harassment.
Their attorney, Thomas Anton, says the high school and district didn't follow their own rules and regulations, and state laws regarding bullying and sexual harassment.
He says the claim is a required step before a lawsuit is filed. The district, which has 45 days to respond, wouldn't comment.
A judge in December declared a mistrial because of a deadlocked jury. A retrial has been scheduled for Jan. 26.
