SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A state judge has officially separated the bribery cases against former Utah attorneys general John Swallow and Mark Shurtleff.
Court records filed late last week show Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills approved a request to split the cases in mid-December.
Prosecutors originally linked the two cases, arguing the allegations of bribery were intertwined and involved many of the same businessmen.
Swallow and Shurtleff's attorneys argued the allegations needed to be considered individually because they involved separate charges stemming from separate incidents.
Prosecutors later agreed and split the work.
The Davis County Attorney's Office is handling the case against Shurtleff, while the Salt Lake County District Attorney's office will prosecute Swallow.
Swallow and Shurtleff are accused of accepting money and gifts like California beach vacations and the use of luxury boats and homes.
Both deny any wrongdoing.
